Friends of Cedewain

The goal of the charity is to promote the welfare & advance the education of the pupils who attend Ysgol Cedewain through fund raising activities – we fund raise through many sources; fayre’s, sponsored events and applications for specific grants. From doing this we can aim to provide & support activities and equipment that’s outside the remit of the local education authority.

H2 Theatre Hafren Performance

https://youtu.be/U-hwHRsatug

Aaron and Chloe’s class had been studying the fauna of mid-Wales and were particularly interested in Red Kites. They all went on a trip down the Elan valley and visited feeding sites. They watched the kites, noticing how they moved. They researched the life of a kite.  As they found out more and more about the kites they brought their knowledge to their creative dance sessions with Heidi Wilson and began to develop a dance that revealed their understanding and love of these amazing birds.

This is part of the class performance at Theatre Hafren on January 27th 2016. This was the culmination of an Arts Council Wales funded project in which 8 classes from Ysgol Cedewain were taught parts of the National Curriculum, Literacy and Numeracy through the medium of creative movement.

Dance Project

Why DANCE?

Through our work with Touch Trust we very much recognise the transformative power of creative movement and music for individuals with learning difficulties. This comes about through its importance in the delivery of our primary objective, the wellbeing of our pupils, out of which comes improved mental and physical health which improves learning outcomes.

The inspiration for our Arts Council Wales funded pilot dance project last year, and its extension this year and into the future, was a national ‘Get On With Science’ (GOWS) initiative with which we were involved. This investigated the science behind music and we engaged a dance practitioner for a 1 day workshop.  This involved a crossover of dance and science curricula. ( See website link to GOWS – Fire in my heart) Our pupils, particularly those with the severest of disabilities, responded so well to this that it got us thinking about how we could incorporate creative dance into the delivery of other areas of the curriculum. Last year our pilot project delivered PSE, Literacy and Numeracy through creative movement / dance and was hugely successful on many levels. ( See power-point – Dance 2013-14) The rest of Wales is now following our lead with a Welsh Government backed National Plan for Creative Learning!

The main purpose of this year’s dance  project is to delivery literacy, numeracy,  PSE and humanities, and to enhance the self-esteem of our pupils.  We hope that through the medium of creative movement our learners will develop improved communication skills, learn about other cultures (particularly how they express their identity through movement), and that participation in a public performance that they have created themselves will bring about a rise in self-esteem.

This project will be an integral part of the delivery of the curriculum to those pupils involved, teaching pupils in and through dance using creative movement to reinforce learning across the curriculum.  As the project progresses we will post pictures of our dancers in action.

Bunsen’s Corner

Bunsen took to the streets of Newtown on carnival day in July to begin to tell the town about the need for a new build for Cedewain. Everyone in school makes the best use of the buildings and the extensive grounds but we do lack facilities to deliver 21st century curriculum to such a wide range of pupils.
Another serious concern is the distance pupils are required to walk or be pushed outdoors between different buildings for different activities. All very fine on a warm summers day but hazardous in cold and bad weather.
Please take every opportunity to raise Bunsens concerns if you meet your local town or county councillor, MP or Welsh Assembly member. Together we need to raise the profile of  Ysgol Cedewain. It is a fantastic school and if we manage to secure a new build just imagine how much better it will be ……….
Join with us to help Bunsen get a new cave!!
